Class 142(2) A device for cutting the weft of an exhausted bobbin near the shuttle and clamping the end attached to the selvedge comprises cutting and clamping jaws mounted in a head 88 slidable in a fixed body 50. When the transfer hammer dog is lifted into the path of the striker on the slay, an arm 65 on the same pivot 35 as the dog turns clockwise and through linkage and levers 58, 56, 75, 81, 84, projects the head 88 to the left (towards the slay) as shown. During this movement, the cutter jaw 91 and the clamping jaw (not shown) are opened by their tails 95 riding on a ramp 98 fixed in space by being attached at 100 to the body 50. As the slay beats up, the weft thread enters the jaws and a striker on the slay pushes the head 88 to the right by engaging an abutment 104; surfaces 96 on the clamping and cutting blades ride on to the ramp 98 in succession, whereby the weft is clamped, then cut. The slay also actuates the transfer hammer dog carried by the pivot 35, thereby moving the pivot and the arm 65 bodily to the right, causing the arm 56 to turn clockwise, whereas movement of the head 88 to the right has caused the arm 75 to turn anti-clockwise; the opposite movements of the arms 56 and 75 are catered for by a clutch 64 consisting of spring-loaded pins 73 in one half which ride out of grooves 72 in the other half under these circumstances. As the slay recedes, the pivot 35 returns to the left, turning the arm 56 anti-clockwise to its original position, in which the clutch 64 re-engages.
