Class 120(2) In a ring and traveller type stretching and twisting machine each ring is freely movable in an upward direction and may be locked in a position above its traversing trajectory. Thread 1 to be stretched is fed over thread guides 2, 6, 8 and 9 to the traveller 10 while the ring 11 is in a raised position due to a spring 22 engaging a notch 27 on one of the rods 13, and unstretched thread is thus wound on a cylindrical member 40 attached to a centring cap 36 at the top of a tube 32. The thread is then wrapped several times about a driven stretching roller 7 and guide roller 8 and the spring 22 is released to allow the ring to fall on to the reciprocating ring rail 18 so that stretched thread is wound on the tube 32. On completion of winding the thread between the cylinder 40 and the tube 32 is severed and the completed package removed. The unstretched thread on the cylinder 40 is removed by running a knife through a groove 41 thereof: Alternatively, the centring cap 36 and cylinder 40 may be formed integrally with the tube 32 and the length of tube so arranged that the unstretched and stretched parts of thread are adjacent on the completed package. The centring cap 36 and a similar member 31 are formed with annular grooves 38, 34 containing rings 39, 35 of rubber which, when the spindle is stationary are completely sunk in the grooves 38, 34, but expand under centrifugal force when the spindle rotates to hold the tube 32 on the spindle 29.
