In a fast nuclear fuel element, of the type described in Specification 778,881, the outer protective tubular sheath carries a series of bands each of which consists of a set of helical fins. The fins of adjacent elements contact each other and bowing of the elements and the formation of hot-spots, due to heating, is reduced as the helical fins permit the flow of coolant past the bands.
