The invention of the parent Specification 983,218 is improved by providing longitudinal ribs 6 extending between some or all of the lugs 10, 11, the ribs extending beyond the cooling fins 3, but not as far as the lugs 10, 11. The invention provides a more rigid fuel element having improved heat transfer characteristics, and the ribs, lugs and fins may be integral, or integral ribs and lugs can be joined to the can.
