Abstract

A self-supporting sound-absorbent sheet material of thickness between 0.5 and 5.0 mm. has an open microporous structure and an air flow resistance of 25 to 1000 gm. cm.-2 sec.-1. In one process of making such material, a polyester resin is dissolved in a fast evaporating solvent, methylene chloride. Cyclohexanone peroxide and cobalt naphthanate are used respectively as a hardener and as an accelerator. The viscosity may be decreased by addition of monostyrene. The solution is mixed with ethylene-glycol which has a high boiling point and does not dissolve the resin. The mixture is heated to 160 DEG C. between metal plates. The methylene chloride and the ethylene-glycol evaporate in successive stages leaving a microporous sheet of resin. The sheet may incorporate a filter or carrier of fibre or of fabric. The porosity depends upon the proportions of the constituents and on the pressure. Specification 698,613 [Group V], is referred to.ALSO:A self-supporting sound-absorbent sheet material of thickness between 0,5 and 5,0 mm. has an open microporous structure and an air flow resistance of 25 to 1000 gm. cm.-2 sec.-1. In one process of making such material, a polyester resin is dissolved in a fast-evaporating solvent, e.g., methylene chloride. Cyclohexanone peroxide and cobalt naphthenate are used respectively as a hardener and as an accelerator. The viscosity may be decreased by addition of monostyrene. The solution is mixed with, for example, ethylene glycol which has a high boiling-point and does not dissolve the resin. The mixture is heated to 160 DEG C. between metal plates. The methylene chloride and the ethylene glycol evaporate in successive stages leaving a microporous sheet of resin. The sheet may incorporate a filler or carrier of fibrous material or of fabric. The porosity depends upon the proportions of the constituents and on the pressure. In another process, a fibre fleece derived from sodium glass webbing is treated with potassium silicate and antimony trioxide to produce a silica gel. On pressing and heating to a temperature insufficient to sublimate the antimony trioxide, a microporous solid sheet is formed. The antimony trioxide controls the porosity. A sheet may be decorated and its acoustic properties may be finely adjusted by spraying with a lacquer such as chlorinated rubber dissolved in methylene chloride, colouring matter being added as necessary. The sheets may be used for modifying the acoustic properties of rooms. (See Group XXXVIII). Specification 698,613 is referred to.
