1 mains.
The present invention relates to sound deadening means for walls, ceilings, etc., particularly in theaters or auditoriums and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as it hereinafter set forth, a deadening means which may be expeditiously applied to the walls or cellmg;
Other objects of the invention are to provide a sound deadening means of theaforementioned character which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eflicient and reliable in 4 use, attractive in appearance and which-may be manufactured and applied at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages'of the invention will become apparent from a study of the'following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like-characters of reference designate corresponding parts thruout the several views, and wherein:-- I Figure 1 is a plan view of a plurality of sound deadening units constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig.1. V
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that-the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a plurality.
of abutting diaphragms which are mounted on a wall, ceiling or other surface in v.a manner to completely cover same, as suggested in Fig. 1 of the drawing, said diaphragms being designated generally by the reference numeral 1. The diaphragms 1 are made of-any suitable vibratory material which may be molded or pressed to the desired form. The diaphragms illustrated in the drawing are substantially squarein plan but same may, of course, be of any other desired shape.
Each diaphragm 1 includes a body 2 from which integral marginal flanges 3 extend for spacing said body 2 from the wall, ceiling or other surface 4 which is being treated. The body portlon 2 is suitably ornamented, as at 5, for enhancing the attractiveness of the wall, ceiling or diaphragms. The outwardly pressed portions '5 also add to the strength of the body 2 in addition to increasing the vibratory qualities thereof. I
Formed integrally with theside flanges 3 of the diaphragms 1 are outturned securing flanges 6 which are for engagement with the wall, ceiling or other surface 4 for mounting said diaphragms thereonthrough the medium of a sinta'ble adhesive. It will be noted from a consideration of Fig. -2 of the drawing that all of the side flanges other surface which has been covered with the 3 of certain of the diaphragms l are provided with the securing flanges 6 whilesaid securing flanges 6 have been omitted or removed from the abut-= ting side flanges 3 of the adjacent diaphragms. It will further be noted that the side flanges 8 which are without the securing flanges 6 rest on the securing flanges 6 of the adjacent diaphragms.
It will thus be seen that I have provided novel means for covering walls, ceilings, etc., with a sound deadening material in a highly attractive and inexpensive manner for materially bettering the acoustic qualities of theaters, auditoriums, etc. When mounting the diaphragms, those which are provided with securing flanges 6 on all sides are first placed in position. Then, the adjacent diaphragms from which certain of the securing flanges 6 have been omitted or removed are secured in position. Of course, it will be apparent that most of the diaphragms 1 will be provided with securing flanges 6 on two sides only thereof. The abutting side flanges 3 of the diaphragms 1 are secured together by an adhesive.
It is believed that the many advantages of a sound deadener for walls, ceilings, etc.,constructed in accordance with the present invention, will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the' details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of'parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:-
As a new article of manufacture, a sound deadener comprising a plurality of substantially square, abutting diaphragms covering the surface to be treated, said diaphragmscomprising vibratory body portions including integral reinforcing means and integral side flanges extending at right angles from said body portions for spacing the body portions from said surface, the side fianges' of the adjacent diaphragms being in abutting eng'agement with each other, certain of the side flanges being comparatively deep and terminating' in c'o-extensive, out-turned securing flanges engageable with the surface for mounting the diaphragms thereon, the remaining side flanges being comparatively shallow and having their free ends in abutting engagement, throughout their width, with the securing flanges at points immediately adjacent said certain side flanges.
