Abstract

907,768. Laminates. TOUGH PLASTICS Ltd. Jan. 8, 1960 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 2929/59. Class 140. Polyester or epoxy resin layers reinforced with fibres, preferably glass fibres, are bonded to vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride polymers or copolymers in sheet or tube form by applying a softening agent to, and allowing it to penetrate the polymer or copolymer layer, evaporating off excess softening agent, and applying the reinforced layer and allowing it to harden. Suitable softening-agents are styrene, tetrahydrofuran, and dioxolane. Solvents incompatible with the setting resin used must be completely removed before applying the resin layer. Preferably a polyester based on maleic anhydride and cross-linked with styrene is used, and in this case it is not essential to evaporate off all the styrene if this is used as softening-agent. The time of operation of the solvent is controlled by controlling the conditions of temperature and air circulation. In addition to the usual catalyst and accelerator constituents the setting resin layer may contain a thixotropic agent such as blown silica. The polymer or copolymer layer may be roughened, as by sanding, before treatment with the softening-agent.
