Class 68(1) Pivotally mounted about a transverse axis at each end of a self-propelled chassis 10 is a cutter head 11 in which the cutting means consists of pick-carrying rotary arms 14 operating within the space defined by an endless cutter chain 15 moving in a guide structure of channel sections in a plane transverse of the chassis. In order that a non-operative cutting head may pass through the mined out space formed by the operative cutting head the upper and inner vertical guide sections of the guide structure can be moved relatively to the other sections, so that the peripheral boundary of the chain diminishes.
