Abstract

810,938. Dental appliances. RITTER CO. Inc. Nov. 27, 1956 [March 14, 1956], No. 36274/56. Class 81 (2). A dental handpiece is provided with two nozzles, one for air and the other for water, the two streams being directed to meet adjacent the cutting tool. Control means are provided to enable the jets to be used separately or together to form a spray. As applied to an angle handpiece each nozzle 94, 96 is supplied through a flexible tube 87, having a bored spigot 99 which engages in the rear end of the nozzle. The outlets 106, 107 are directed towards the cutting tip of the drill 93 so as to perform a cooling action as well as washing. Water is supplied from the main through a pressure regulator and metering valve and both air and water are controlled by solenoid-actuated valves which are energized through individual switches and through a contact operated by the motor foot switch, so that the valves are closed when the motor is switched off. In the case of a straight handpiece the outlets from the nozzles are directed along the axes of the nozzles to converge on the drill tip and, if a handpiece is to be changed, the spigots on the flexible tubes are merely withdrawn from the nozzles.
