Abstract

868,247. Dental syringes. SIEMENSREINIGER-WERKE A.G. Oct. 8, 1959 [Oct. 11, 1958], No. 34187/59. Class 81 (2). A dental instrument, such as a hand piece or syringe, with means including a flexible pipe for delivering to the area to be treated or to a dental tool cooling or rinsing liquid, has a suction device for removing liquid remaining in the pipe when the liquid supply has been cut off. As shown, pipes 9 and 10 supply to an air turbine hand-piece compressed air at 1.5 to 2.5 atmospheres excess pressure and water at 0.2 to 0.5 atmospheres excess pressure, respectively. The pipes 9 and 10 have reduction valves 11 and 14, respectively, and shut-off valves 13 and 16 operated by electromagnets 12 and 15, and both pipes pass through a heating coil H. A waterstorage chamber 17 comprises a resilient diaphragm 18 which bears against a disc 23 and a compression-spring 24. A pipe 21 leads into the chamber from the pipe 9 and a pipe 26 is connected via branches 27, 28 with the pipe 10. When the hand-piece is brought into use, the compressed air is first switched on and some passes through the pipe 21, depressing the diaphragm 18 against the action of the spring 24, to close the pipe 26. The water supply is then switched on and being at a lower pressure than the air, water flows through the pipe 10 to the hand-piece, none passing into the branch 27. The water supply is switched off first and then the compressed air which relieves the pressure on the diaphragm 18. Under the action of the spring 24 the diaphragm is raised, opening the pipe 26. Any water in the pipe 10 is sucked through the branch 27 and a non-return valve 29 into the chamber 17. When the hand-piece is used again the diaphragm is depressed and the water is forced from the chamber 17 through a non-return valve 30 to the pipe 10. Screw means (not shown) enable the disc 23 to be adjusted to vary the capacity of the chamber 17. The arrangement described may be used in a syringe for dispensing a water/air mixture if there is a pressure difference between the minimum air and maximum water pressures. If the pressures are equal and in electrically-driven hand-pieces an electromagnet operates the diaphragm 18.
