Abstract

1352398 Blood transfusion apparatus R DEROUINEAU 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970 27 July 1970] 21233/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division F1] A blood transfusion apparatus comprises a flexible tube pump, an inlet tube 17 terminating in a needle for insertion into a container of blood 23, an outlet tube 19 having a bellows 20 to damp pressure pulses, and terminating in a needle 22 theflexible, tube 9 being removably mounted within a housing 1-3 for intermittent compression and release by a preferably adjustable eccentric ring 8 driven by an electric motor. The tube 9 has. inlet and outlet ball valves 14 the inlet ball being preferably stainless steel and the outlet ball, nylon. To prevent air entering the pump when the blood, container is empty a shut-off valve, Fig. 4 (not shown) comprising a filter and a ball made of a material less dense than blood is located in the inlet tube, the ball dropping to co-operate with a conical seat when the valve is empty of blood. The tube 9 may be removed for sterilizing from the housing either axially, Fig 2, or transversely via an elongate slot, Figs. 5, 6, (not shown). The bellows 20 may be replaced by acombined damper and bubble remover, Fig. 7 (not shown) the blood being directed downwardly through a filter, any air being removed to rise and enter a flexible bellows.
