Abstract
810,857. Hot air &c. engines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 1, 1957 [Nov. 2, 1956], No. 33502/56. Class 7(1) [Also in Group XIII] In a hot gas engine having expansion and compression cylinders 10 connected by heat exchangers 1 and generators 2, the cylinders and exchangers being cooled or heated by liquid circulating media in casings 12, the media are circulated by pulsating diaphragms actuated by variations in pressure in the cylinders 10. Each casing 12 is provided with a liquid inlet member 3 receiving liquid from pipe 103 or 203. The member is bounded at its inner end by a diaphragm 101 which is part of an end wall of the corresponding cylinder 10. Variations of pressure in the cylinder pulsate the diaphragm so that liquid is withdrawn from pipe 103 or 203 through non-return valve 106 and forced into the casing 12 through non-return valve 105. In the casings the liquid is caused to take an extended course through the exchangers 1 and in contact with the walls of cylinders 10 by baffles 11 and is discharged by pipes 303, 403.
