Abstract
1530492 Heat pumps E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 11 March 1976 [12 March 1975] 9768/76 Heading F4H In a closed Rankine-cycle engine powered refrigeration and heating apparatus of the type described in U.K. Specification 1,404,431, wherein only a single fluid is used for both power and refrigeration purposes, the interior of the housing H is subdivided by a partition 50 into a low pressure compartment Y and a high pressure compartment X. In operation, refrigerant vapour in the compartment Y enters the compressor P through intake passages 47, is compressed and discharged through the passages (49, Fig. 4) into the compartment X where it combines with the turbine exhaust vapour discharged from the engine turbine PX through diffuser 56. The combined fluid enters the heat exchange tubes 76 of the condenser C where it is condensed by heat exchange with a cooling fluid, e.g. air discharged outwardly between fins 75. The condensate formed in the tubes 76 flows into an annular chamber 82 where it is divided and supplied to the boiler B through radial tubes 84 and to refrigerant capillary tubes 93, RX through feed thimbles 89. When the condensate in the thimbles 89 rises to the level of the inner ends of the tubes 92 it overflows into the tubes and to and through the capillary tubes 93 where it is expanded and supplied to the evaporator E. Sensor tubes 85, surrounding the tubes 84, allow communication between the boiler B and the thimbles 89, via tubes 86 and 91 and manifold ring 87.
