Abstract

810,744. Securing wheels to axles. WALLIS, G. L. Sept. 13, 1957 [June 15, 1956], No. 18611/56. Class 144 (1). A vehicle wheel 3 is releasably locked to an axle 2, to impart drive thereto, by means of a pair of friction plates 4, 5 supported on the axle one on each side of the wheel, one 5 of said plates being held against axial displacement away from the wheel and the other 4 of said plates being slidably and non-rotatably mounted on the axle, and a swingable lever 7 being supported on the axle 2 so that when the lever is swung a cam edge 9 thereon urges the plate 4 against the wheel 2 and the wheel is clamped thereby between the plates 4, 5. As shown applied to a seed or fertilizer distributing apparatus comprising a distributer drum 1 driven by the axle 2, the friction plate 5 is positioned axially inwardly of the wheel 3 to abut a fixed collar 6 but to be freely rotatable on the axle. The friction plate 4 has an axial bore provided with flats to key with flats on the axle end and is backed by a pressure plate 10 on which the lever 7 operates through a spring washer 11. The lever 7 is of U-shape with its limb ends provided with the cam edge 9 and pivoted on the ends of a pin 8 extending diametrically transversely through the axle end.
