Abstract

A process for adding alloying material such as ferromanganese to molten steel comprises suspending a comminuted mixture of the alloying material and an exothermic agent such as sodium nitrate and aluminium in an inert gas and injecting the suspended admixture into the steel at a velocity sufficient to ensure penetration of the surface of the molten steel. The mixture preferably also contains an accelerator such as an alkali or alkaline earth metal compound, e.g. calcium fluoride. The mixture comminuted to an average diameter not over 0.8 mm. may be injected at a velocity of at least 39.5 metres per second. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 764,763.
