Abstract

A method of degassing a molten metal comprises introducing below the surface of the metal a pre-dried solid material which will produce carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide at the temperature of the melt, the generated gas being free from the gas to be removed or having a partial pressure thereof less than the equivalent internal pressure of the gas to be removed. Marble chips and powder may be bonded together with a silicate, the mixture dried to a moisture content of less than 1.5 per cent, and plunged below the surface of a melt of steel, copper, or nickel, the carbon dioxide produced removing hydrogen. The mixture may also contain carbon to increase the carbon monoxide content and also the total volume of gas. Other substances which may be used include a limestone, preferably coated with fluorspar, or other alkaline earth metal carbonates and an inert material, e.g. magnesia, may also be included. The first Provisional Specification refers also to the use of gases, e.g. carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sodium chloride vapour magnesium vapour, and nitrogen. Nitrogen may be obtained by the decomposition of calcium cyanide or an organic nitrogen compound. The second Provisional Specification refers also to the use of the oxides of nitrogen and fluxing materials. Specification 16001/12 [Class 72] is referred to.
