Abstract

1,181,848. Refining steel; fluxes. R.L. BECKER. Aug. 31, 1967 [Oct.10, 1966], No.39980/67. Headings C7D and C7M. To improve the rimming characteristics of steel and to reduce its inclusion content there is added during teeming into the mould a mixture comprising carbon, a carbonate salt, such as sodium carbonate a fluxing agent consisting of sodium fluoride, calcium fluoride or sodium aluminium fluoride, and an anti-foaming agent consisting of aluminium, titanium, zirconium, boron or silicon. The mixture is preferably added at the rate of <SP>1</SP>/ 15 to 2 1b per ton of steel, and may be sufficient to unbalance the carbon-oxygen equilibrium by at least 0À005% A particular composition exemplified consists of 60% carbon, 14% calcium fluoride, 14% sodium carbonate and 12% of aluminium.
