Abstract

808,373. Vehicle power steering. HYDROSTEER Ltd. May 3, 1956 [May 5, 1955; June 17, 1955], Nos. 13113/55 and 17646/55. Class 79(5) In a vehicle power-assisted steering mechanism having a manually operable steering column 1 operating through a steering gear on the steerable wheels (not shown), the steering gear members having interengaging surfaces inclined with respect to the steering column axis, reaction between the surfaces causes axial movement of the steering column 1 which actuates a power control valve 16 through a transmission member 13, the valve being detachable from the gear and disposed externally of the gear and column. As shown the invention is applied to a steering gear comprising a rack and pinion gear 6, 7, the pinion 6 being carried by the column 1 supported by bearings 2, 3 in gear housing 4 and the rack 7 being connected to the steerable wheels. Axial movement due to gear reaction is limited by a plug 18 engaging the walls 19 of a ring 8 carried by bearings 11 on abutments 9, 10 on the column. Engaging the ring 8 is the member 13 pivoted at 14 in the housing 4 and engaging at 15 a spool member 17 of the control valve 16, whereby reaction in the gear 6, 7 initiates power steering. Axial movement of the column is effected against a restoring spring action. The member 13 can be axially removed from the housing 4 after removal of a plug 22. The invention may be applicable to other than rack and pinion steering gear. The power mechanism (not shown) controlled by the valve may comprise a double acting ram or single acting rams arranged one at each end of the rack. Specification 679,958 is referred to.
