Abstract

1,243,854. Vehicle power steering. CAM GEARS Ltd. 23 March, 1970 [6 May, 1969], No. 23037/69. Heading B7H. A power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering assembly comprises a pinion housing 12 slidable parallel to the longitudinal axis of a rack housing 4, and a valve 24 connected to the pinion housing 12 for controlling fluid flow to a power assistance ram, the valve being actuated by movement of the pinion housing relative to the rack housing, the pinion housing being spaced radially from the rack housing by spaced Bellville washers 8A, 8B. The relative movement between the two housings, which arises from reaction to turning of the road wheels on the road, is limited by a stop pin 16 secured to the pinion housing 12 and slidable in aligned axial slots 18, 19 in the spacer sleeve 6 and rack housing 4. Pin 16 is connected by adjuster nut 26 to spool valve 24. The Bellville washers may be pre-loaded in the neutral position of steering. In the displaced position of the steering one of the washers, e.g. 8A, exerts no spring face between the housings while the other, e.g. 8B, exerts a restoring force due to its being further loaded (Fig. 2). The washers are adjustable by means of a lock-nut 14.
