Abstract

1,259,499. Power assisted steering. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. 25 March, 1969, No. 15612/69. Heading B7H. A power-assisted steering device, particularly for motor vehicles, comprises a steering base 3 with two valves 1, 1<SP>1</SP> for cutting off the power assistance before the end lock positions of steerable vehicle wheels, a power piston of the device being movable manually beyond each power assistance cut-off point, wherein said valves 1, 1<SP>1</SP> are disposed in a steering base cover 2 and are selectively operable through a segment 7 mounted directly on the end face of a Pitman shaft 5 and wherein the valve which is opened releases the hydraulic pressure of the respective loaded pressure chamber of a servomotor 8. In operation, if pressure chamber 80 is loaded with pressure medium, Pitman shaft 5 is rotated anticlockwise (as viewed in Fig. 1). When control surface 7<SP>1</SP> contacts valve piston 11, the piston is raised off valve seat 14, so that pressure medium can flow from chamber 80, with a simultaneous pressure drop, through a pipe 81, top valve bores 15, valve seat 14, bottom valve bores 1511 into a chamber 19, which is relieved of pressure via cover chamber 20, and through pipe 21 to an oil reservoir 22. The cut-off point is adjustable by means of valve sleeves 10, 10<SP>1</SP> being screw threaded in the cover 2 and by the segment 7 being adjustable or having a cavity of arcuate form to receive fastening screws. Segments of different sizes may be employed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,035,686.
