Abstract

1,115,693. Power assisted steering. AUSTIN MOTOR CO. Ltd. 14 March, 1967 [18 Jan., 1966], No. 2259/66. Heading B7H. A power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering mechanism comprises a rack 1 and pinion 5, the stationary power cylinder being provided by the rack housing 2 and the piston 17 being integral with the rack. The steering shaft 6 is mounted in an end bearing which permits limited lateral movement due to reaction between the rack and pinion in response to a steering movement. A valve member 7A is integral with the pinion housing 7 and has a fluid inlet 8A connected to an annulus 8 and an outlet 9B connected to annuli 9 and 9A. The member 7A can slide upon a member 11 rigid with the rack housing support 4 and centring springs 18 for the member 7A are provided. Fluid connections 12A and 13A to opposite sides of the piston 17 register with annuli 12 and 13 in member 11 in the neutral position of the valve. Upon a steering movement, the valve member 7A is moved by the reaction between the rack and pinion and fluid connections are established to provide power assistance to the rack in the appropriate direction. Upon completion of the movement the valve is moved to its neutral position and the servo-piston remains at rest.
