Abstract

1504351 Power-assisted steering systems ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG 8 Oct 1975 [12 Oct 1974] 41225/75 Heading B7H A power-assisted steering system for a vehicle comprises a steering shaft 7, Fig. 1, carrying pins 12, 13 respectively coupled to a reaction piston 10 providing reactive feel and to a control piston 11 controlling fluid flow to servo-chambers 16, 17, the reaction piston 10 being provided with further pistons 62, 62A, Fig. 2, urged apart by a spring 63 and operative to limit reactive feel forces. Reaction chambers 80, 80A associated with the reaction piston 10 are normally communicated with servo-chambers 17, 16 through bores 67, 67A. Excessive pressure in either of reaction chambers 80, 80A causes the adjacent piston 62 or 62A to move against the action of spring 63 so as to interrupt communication with the associated bore 67 or 67A. The steering shaft 7 is connected by a torsion bar 6 to a spindle 5. The spindle 5 is coupled by recirculating balls 4 to a servopiston 2 meshing with a sector shaft 3. The neutral position of the control piston 11 may be adjusted by means of adjustable screws 51, 51A. A fluid line 24 of the steering system is connected with lines 36, 37 for connection with other vehicle fluid systems, e.g. a braking system or a vehicle level control system.
