Abstract

1,163,084. Power assisted steering. CAM GEARS (LUTON) Ltd. 23 Nov., 1966 [17 Feb., 1966], No. 6974/66. Heading B7H. In a power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering mechanism in which hydraulic power assistance is controlled in response to the reaction between the rack 1 and the pinion 2, the valve comprises a body portion 7 rigid with a steering box 4 in which the pinion 2 is mounted, and a sliding spool 6 is fixed to a housing 5 for the rack. In the actuation of the valve, the steering box moves axially of the rack relatively to an extension, 11, 10, of the rack housing, which is fixed to the vehicle and to which the housing 5 is pivoted by a pair of pivots (16), 17. The valve is re-centred by means of a series of pistons 20, 21 and springs 19. The piston for hydraulic power assistance is carried by an extension of the. rack. The pivotal mounting of the extension 5 relieves the valve from any forces laterally of the rack.
