Abstract

808,365. Folding stays; friction hinges. WILKES BERGER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. March 12, 1957 [March 12, 1956], No. 7673/56. Classes 65(1) and 65(2) A folding stay offering frictional resistance to folding in one direction only comprises three members, the first, 11, and the second 12, being pivoted together at 28, the third member 13 being connected to the second to have limited relative movement thereto. The pivotal joint at 28 comprises a guard plate 39 secured to the second member 12 and a friction disc 36 disposed between the first member and a notched wheel 24, the joint pivoting freely on the adjacent faces of the guard plate and the wheel when the latter is unrestrained, but offering frictional ,resistance through the faces of the disc when the wheel is forced to rotate with the second member 12. Opening movement applied to the lid 16 causes the third member 13 to pivot on member 12 to withdraw its pawl nose 23 from the notched wheel to free the latter: conversely, closing of the lid causes the pawl nose to engage the wheel and force it to move with the second member. In a modification, (Fig. 4, not shown), the device acts as a combined friction stay and hinge for the lid.
