805,991. Hinges and pivots. ELANDBRANDT N.V. March 15,1957, No. 8699/57. Class 65(2) A friction hinge for a window rotatable about a horizontal axis comprises a plate 7 secured to the window sash 8 and a plate 9 secured to the window frame 10, the plates being relatively rotatable about a bolt 11 and the plate 9 carrying an intermediate plate 12 which is prevented from rotating relative thereto and is urged towards the plate 7 by a spring 15. The opposing faces of the plates 7, 12 are each provided with conical friction faces 18, 16 and raised sector-shaped friction faces 17, 19 bounded by bevelled flanks. The arrangement is such that when the window is turned from its closed position the conical friction faces are in engagement and provide great friction, but on reaching the position 4, Fig. 2, these faces are disengaged by the engagement of the flanks of the sector-shaped faces which abut and slide over each other and urge the plate 12 away from the plate 7. A smaller friction effect to resist movement is then provided by the faces 17, 19 until the window reaches the position 5, when the sectorshaped 'faces slide off each other and the conical friction faces again come into contact and arrest the motion. An ornamental cover 20 is provided.
