Abstract

Textiles are dyed by applying at room temperature a bath containing a vat dye in the non-reduced condition, a reducing agent such as sodium hyposulphite or sodium formaldehydesulphoxylate, at least 1 gm. mol. per litre of an alkali metal hydroxide and such a quantity of an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, that the absolute value of the bath potential at room temperature is lower, but at 100 DEG C. higher, than the leuco-potential of the dye at the dye concentration used, then effecting reduction and fixation of the dye at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C., e.g. by steaming, and finally oxidizing. Numerous examples describe the dyeing of cotton, the bath in each case also containing glycerine.
