808,212. Carding engines. T. M. M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. Oct. 4, 1956 [Nov. 21, 1955], No. 33269/55. Class 120(1) In a carding machine designed for experimental purposes, the processing elements viz. swift 13, fancy 17, workers 18 and strippers 19, are supported in operating condition solely by a frame 10, 11 so that they all extend forwardly of one side thereof, means are provided rearwardly of the said side of the frame for imparting motion to such elements and means are also provided to give a wide range of adjustment of the positional relationship and/or the relative speeds of some or all of the elements. As shown, the elements 13, 17, 18, 19 are made a few inches in length (i.e. about one tenth as long as in conventional production machines) while the other dimensions are full scale. The frame members 10, 11 are duplicated and connected by tie-bars 12. The swift shaft 14 is supported in fixed position by the frame in bearings 15, 16. The fancy shaft 171 and worker shafts 181 are carried by brackets vertically adjustable on upright frame members 101 which are themselves horizontally adjustable. The stripper shafts 191 are supported by brackets 192 pivoted on the worker shafts; the angular position of brackets 192 can be regulated and the radial position of the strippers on their brackets is adjustable by screws 193. The swift and fancy shafts are driven from a countershaft 20 via pulleys 22, 23 respectively. The stripper shafts are driven via a belt 25 from a countershaft 24 driven from fancy shaft 171. Sprockets on the worker shafts are driven by a chain 26 connected to one of the other drives of the machine or driven by an independent motor. Expanding-pulley type variable speed gears may be provided in connection with the strippers or other processing elements.
