Abstract
807,976. Vehicle wheels. KELSEY-HAYES CO. Dec. 19, 1956 [Jan. 6, 1956], No. 38714/56. Class 144 (1). In a vehicle wheel wherein the wheel rim 2 is spot welded at angularly spaced intervals along the rim base 5 to a wheel body 1, grooves 15 are coined in the wheel body in general angular alignment with the spot welds 11 and without penetrating the thickness of the wheel body, to increase the flexibility of the wheel body and reduce the bending stress upon the spot welds. As shown the wheel body comprises a web 3 with a radial outer peripheral portion 14 from which project spaced spokes 8 connecting into an axial flange 4 which extends the full axial width of and is spot welded to the rim base 5. The spot welds 11 are elliptical, elongated circumferentially of the rim, and are sited as near as practicable to the centre line of the rim. The grooves 15, Fig. 3, are coined in the flange 4 and are arcuate to be evenly spaced from the adjacent spot weld 11. Each groove extends circumferentially beyond each end of the associated weld. In an alternative form, the grooves are provided in the axially inwardly facing bend joining the spoke ends with the flange portions.
