Abstract
176,422. Rogers, A., and Shrewsbury S. T. & Challiner Tyre Co., Ltd. Oct. 14, 1920. Disc wheels of the type comprising one or, two sheet-metal discs a r e made by forcing on to the periphery of the discs flanged rings and shrinking thereon an outer ring with such contractile force as to distort the flanged rings transversely with or without reducing them circumferentially, the outer ring thereafter being machined true to take the tyre. As applied to a double disc wheel, the peripheries of the discs 2, Fig. 1, are pressed into the angle of rings 1 and are connected together by shouldered rivets 5. The discs are also secured together in spaced relation at the hub by shouldered, sleeves 13, Fig. 10, and bolts 14. An outer ring 9 is shrunk over the two rings 1 with such force as to cause the metal to take the shape indicated in doted lines, after which the outer surface of the ring is machined. The force of contracticn may be such as to reduce the rings 1 in circumferential length and impart a bowed shape to the discs or the discs may be bowed first by the transverse pull of the rivets 5. Fig. 6 shows the application to a single disc in which the periphery of the disc 2 is secured in a groove formed by two rings 1 with a lap joint 10. A modification of this construction consists in providing the groove in a single ring of flanged section. The centres of the discs may be clamped in the space between two rings 16, 18, Fig. 10, riveted together or between a ring and the face of the hub flanges. The spaces are formed by bosses on the rings.
