Abstract

807,734. Rotary pumps and motors. WHITTAKER CO. Ltd., W. R. May 31, 1956, No. 16844/56. Class 110 (2). A rotary motor or pump, Figs. 2, 4 and 9, comprises a rotor 38 having an undulating blade 40 which is adapted to contact the end walls 34, 35 of the working chamber 30 and co-operates with an abutment 44 movable about a pivot 52. The abutment is provided with seals 58 freely mounted on pins 60 and bears against spring- loaded sealing elements 134. The rotor consists of a steel core covered with a synthetic plastic sheath or together with the liners 144 of the working chamber, the bearing sleeves 56 of the abutment and the seals 58 thereof is made entirely of a synthetic plastic material such as a polyamide-resin. In a modification, Figs. 1 and 18 (not shown), the arcuate slotted portion of the abutment is constituted by a flat plate. In another modification, Figs. 20 ... 26 (not shown), the rotor is provided with two undulations and co-operates with two opposed abutments, the working chamber being consequentially divided into two sets of contracting and two sets of expanding compartments. The dual pump construction of Figs. 20 ... 26 may incorporate a common inlet manifold and a common outlet manifold or have two separate inlet and two separate outlet ports for withdrawing fuel from two tanks at equal rates and feeding same to two aircraft engines, see Fig. 28 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 30, the rotor 355 is provided with a laterallyextending cylindrical blade 372 which divides the working chamber 370 into radially inner and outer chambers, see also Figs. 29, 31 and 32 (not shown). The embodiment of Figs. 29 ... 32 may function as a dual pump or motor or as a combined pump and motor by providing the rotor with more than one undulation and providing the corresponding number of abutments therefor, see Fig. 33 (not shown). The abutment may be urged into its central position by a torsion spring, see Fig. 34 (not shown).
