Abstract
807,281. Utilizing wave energy. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Aug. 2, 1957 [May 4, 1956], No. 13952/56. Class 69 (1). A device for suspension in water below a boat or other supporting float for use in deriving power from the up and down motion of the latter comprises a stem 11 suspended from the float by a cable 14 and having a rectangular head 12 to which vanes 17, 18 are pivotally attached so that when device is suspended vertically beneath the float the vanes are able to swing upwardly about their pivots 15, 16 through less than ninety degrees from " open " positions in which they are substantially horizontal to " closed " positions in which the vanes are inclined each at a small angle to the vertical, and vice versa, so that the vanes tend to close as the float moves downwardly and to open and so bring about a pull on the float as the latter moves upwardly. Threaded on the stem 11 is first a lower fixed collar 23, than a coiled compression spring 24, then a sliding sleeve 25 and lastly a fixed collar 26. The sliding sleeve 25 has apertured radial lugs 27, 28 through which extend the bights of two V-shaped links 29, 30 whose free ends are bent outwardly and extend through apertures formed in upturned flanges 21, 22 on the vanes 17, 18 respectively. When the float is moving downwardly the vanes 17, 18 will assume the closed position shown in dotted lines. As the float moves upwardly on a wave the vanes will move against the influence of the spring 24 into the open position, thereby increasing the drag or resistance of the device to movement through the water and a substantial tension is applied to the cable 14. The repeated tensioning of the cable may be used to operate a ratchet or other mechanism.
