A machine with a polyphase stator has two windings on the rotor of which the outer is connected to slip rings and the other may be of squirrel-cage type in sub-slots 6. The slip rings are connected to variable resistance for starting as a motor and for alternator operation the winding is D.C. energized e.g. by star connection with two legs connected to one side of the supply. The squirrel cage conductors may be tubular and traversed by air circulated by a fan.
