Abstract
806,618. Removing surface metal by blowpipes. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION Ltd. June 4, 1957 [June 4, 1956], No. 17238/56. Class 83 (4). Heated ingots or the like 23 are de-scaled within a chamber 13 having flame cutting nozzles 12 which direct the flames on to all exposed surfaces of the ingot. The chamber 13 is removably enclosed within an outer casing 10 having an internal lagging 14 through which the nozzles 12 are removably inserted. The ingot is initially mounted on a table 22 which is raised by a pneumatic or hydraulic motor 25 to insert the ingot into the chamber and then press a flange 27 against a shoulder 28 to seal the chamber. Supply of fuel to the nozzles is increased automatically when the ingot enters the chamber by closing a limit switch 29 controlling a solenoid-operated valve 33 which determines the fuel supply. Ingots may be de-scaled after removal from their soaking pits or after re-heating for subsequent forging or rolling.
