Abstract
404,797. Heat-treating manganese steel ; crusher jaws. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, London.-(Krupp Grusonwerk Akt.-Ges., F. ; Buckau, Magdeburg, Germany.) Dec. 2, 1932, No. 34212. [Classes 59 and 72.] In the heat treatment of articles of manganese steel, the whole article is heated to at least 1000‹ C. and the portions of the article which in practice are subjected to pressure and wear are then cooled down slowly by means of compressed air, steam or other gently acting cooling medium so as to produce an austeritic carbide structure in those parts and the whole article is then quenched. The parts of the articles are generally cooled to below 920‹ C. before quenching. As applied to the treatment of a crusher jaw, the jaw 6 heated to about 1000‹ C. is placed on rollers 4 mounted in a box 5, and the teeth of the jaw are cooled by compressed air issuing from holes 2 in the upper surface of a box 1 connected to a supply conduit 3. The temperature of the other side of the crusher is kept at at least 1000‹ C. and when the teeth have cooled down to below 920‹ C., the whole jaw is quenched, thus producing a tough austenitic rear side and have teoth having a hard austeritic carbide structure which may also contain martensite.
