806,522. Earth continuity couplings; sleeve couplings; junction boxes. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S (SUBMARINE CABLES)' Ltd. Jan. 11, 1957 [Jan. 12, 1956], No. 1160/56. Class 38 (1). A joint in the conductor of a gas-filled submarine cable is made by inserting a copper mandrel 6 into the ends of the conductors and mounting them by a split copper ferrule 7, and is enclosed by a seamless metal tube 10, metal strips 11 (two, as shown) inside tube 10 collectively surrounding the conductor and being connected at their ends to the metal sheath 2 of the cable. One end of tube 10 is sealed to sheath 2 by making a cast plumb 12 with a container 13 and then making a compression joint between a flange 14 threaded on tube 10 and a corresponding flange of container 13 by bolts 16, a gasket 15 of polychloroprene being interposed. The other end of tube 10 is sealed by the provision of a conical step 17 in the container, a packing ring 18 lying between the tube and container and compressed by a metal ring 19 on which pressure is exerted by a nut 20, the tube 10 being coupled to the container by a nut 21 having a flange 22 held between nut 20 and a nut 23, rotation between the tube and container being prevented by keys engaging in keyways and slots in the container and tube and metal ring 19. Flanges 14, 42 support tube 10 in an outer casing, tie rods 25 passing through bulkheads 26 and tying together armour clamps 27. A gland for the passage of the cable through the bulkhead comprises an internally stepped sleeve 29 in which moves a nut 30 to compress a ring 31. Strips 11 are mounted in tube 10 by metal rings 33 each in two parts one making a lap joint with the other, and the ends of the strips are clamped by one or more worm clips 34. The outer casing 35, 36 is described in Specification 806,521.
