806,467. Surgical optical instruments. WISBEY, W. E. July 31, 1957, No. 24266/57. Class 81 (2). A bronchoscope has a blade, carrying a lamp, pivoted to a handle carrying a battery, the pivot being such that the parts are readily separable. The blade 11 and the handle 1 are connected at the pivot which comprises a flat tongue 8 engaged between two side members 4, 5 and rotatable on a pivot pin 6. The tongue 8 has a radial recess 9 by which it may be readily withdrawn from the pivot screw but, under normal conditions, it is prevented from moving radially by a circular nut 7 engaging in a corresponding recess in the tongue 8. In order to avoid exposed arcing of the contacts when the lamp is switched on or off the lower face of the tongue 8 is used as a cam which depresses a spring-loaded stud 23 to make contact with the battery terminal. Shortly before the circuit is completed an insulated stud 27 reaches the stud 23 to form the circuit to the lamp 12. Thus the lamp can only be lit with the blade in the raised position and the actual contact is made inside the handle.
