Abstract
806,283. Locks. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 17, 1956 [Aug. 26, 1955], No. 24547/55. Class 44 A lock comprises, a body part 10, a keyoperated bolt 14 slidable within the body and having a longitudinal slot 15 in which a slide 16 is mounted, a member 21 slidable at right angles to the bolt and adapted to move the slide, one or more blocking pieces 24 slidable at right angles to the bolt and having notches 25 to be engaged by a projection 22 on the slide during movement of the bolt. As described, the slide 16 has a longitudinal slot 17 engaged by a fixed pin 18, and a lateral pin 19 which engages an oblique slot 20 in the member 21. This member and one or more blocking pieces 24 are slidably mounted upon fixed pins 18, 23, and have cam edges 27, 26 which are engaged by a key 13. When withdrawing the bolt, the key first engages the edges 26, sliding the blocking pieces upwards so that the lower notch 25 of each piece is in line with the projection 22. Further clockwise rotation of the key causes the member 21 to slide upwards and thereby move the slide 16 so that the projection 22 engages the lower notches 25. The key then acts directly on the bolt to withdraw it, after which the member 21 and the blocking pieces 24 return to their former positions. Upper notches, 25 formed in the blocking pieces are aligned with the projection 22 when a master-key is used. The bolt may be dead-locked by engagement of a projection 30 formed on the member 21 by one of two slots 31 formed in the lower edge of the slot 15. In another embodiment, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the projection 30 and the slots 31 are omitted, the member 21 is shaped to avoid engagement by the key, and a pin on the member 21 engages an inverted V-shaped surface or slot in the bolt 14. Movement of the bolt raises the member 21 and thereby causes the projection 22 to engage the notches 25. In a further embodiment, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), the slot 20 in the member 21 is so shaped that the slide 16 moves oppositely from its motion in the previous embodiments. The projection 22 passes through a slot in the member 21 and through a smaller slot in each of the blocking pieces 24; and teeth on the projection 22 engage similar teeth on one edge of each of the smaller slots to prevent picking.
