Description

A. CASALIS Aug. 13, 1968 LOCK Filed Sept. 9, 1966 INVENTOR' Alfred CASALIS ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,396,550 LGCK Alfred Casalis, 10 Rue de lEst, Moun'er, Switzerland Filed Sept. 9, 1966, Ser. No. 578,337 1 Claim. (Cl. 70-134) The object of this invention is a lock of the type comprising a sliding bolt with vertically movable comb, loaded by a lever and a vertically movable part, the lever and the part acting solely through their own weight. It is an improvement of the lock of my main patent.
In the locks of this known type the bolt can make illtirned movements starting from one or the other of its extreme positions. In case of such movements, the finger of a cylinder which can be actuated by a key, can no longer influence the bolt in either direction.
According to the present invention the bolt carries a pin, in contacts with a part formed as a cam and having a vertically movable part, in such a way that the bolt is prevented from making ill-timed movements starting from either of its extreme positions.
The enclosed drawing illustrates, as an example, one embodiment of the lock according to the invention.
The only figure is a side view of the lock, without the covering plate.
In the lock of the invention, the locking bolt 1 is moved by the finger 5 of a cylinder which can be actuated by a key, this finger acting on a comb 3 located in the fore ground during the opening and closing, the comb being drawn in dot-and-dash lines in order to show the otherwise parts hidden. This comb 3, guided for vertical movement by the pins 6 and 7, is constantly loaded by a lever 2 pivotally mounted on the pin 6 and by a part 4 guided for vertical movement and supported by the lever 2. The parts 2 and 4 act solely by gravity, under their own weight, the action of the weight of the part 4 being increased by the lever 2 due to the fact that it is supported by the end of lever 2 most remote from the pivot 6.
According to the present invention the bolt 1 carries a pin 8, cooperating with a member for the control of the lock pin movements having a part 9a acting as a cam and having a part 9 guided by the pin 6 and the pin 10 in order to be vertically movable. Part 9a is formed with a slot 11 having an inclined portion 11a of which the part 11b is parallel to the direction of movement of the bolt 1 and adjacent to the practically vertical edge 12.
When the bolt 1 is in its retracted position, the pin 8 is at the upper end of the inclined portion 11a of the slot 11. The bolt can hence not move without lifting the part 9; it is therefore prevented from making ill-timed movements, as a result of which the finger 5 would hit the horizontal edge 13 of the bolt instead of penetrating in the entry 14 for action on its edge 15.
3,396,560 Patented Aug. 13, 1968 When the bolt 1 is pushed towards its active position, the pin 8 slides in the slot 11 while lifting the part 9 which falls back as soon as the bolt approaches its active position. In this latter position, the pin 8 prevents any illtimed movement as a consequence of the bolt 1 towards the left by hitting the upper end of the inclined part 11a of the slot 11; a movement towards the right is prevented as usual by the pin 7.
While turning the cylinder with the finger 5 in counterclockwise direction the finger 5 acts first on the edge 17 of part 9 in order to lift it to liberate the way for the pin 8; the finger 5 then penetrates as usual in the entry 14 and then acts on the edge 16 for retracting the bolt 1.
The notch 18 of the part 9 has a shape such that a pin 19 fixed on the rear part of the bolt 1 can slide on the base plate of the lock without hindering the part 9 in its movements.
As an alternative, the slot 11 could be V- or U-shaped, the pin 8 then acting in the active position of the bolt the same way as in the retracted position.
I claim:
1. In a lock having a laterally displaceable lock bolt terminated with a locking end, the combination comprising:
(a) key operated means including an actuating pin ,cooperable with said lock bolt to move it laterally in both directions;
(b) a control member for said lock bolt, said member having a front edge and formed with an upward inclined, rearwardly directed slot opening at said front edge;
(e) means guiding said control member to allow vertical movement only;
(d) said control member having a lower edge disposed to be engaged by said actuating pin for vertical displacement of said control member, and
(e) a control pin on said lock bolt projecting therefrom in the direction of said control member, so constructed and arranged that said control pin stands to abut said control member front edge in one position of said lock bolt, engages into said slot upon lifting of said control member and displacement of said lock bolt by said actuating pin and lies at the inner end of said slot when said lock bolt reaches a second position.
