Abstract

A cement which sets hard in a predetermined period of time under elevated temperature conditions, and which expands on setting, comprises magnesia, which has been calcined at a temperature of 2000 DEG to 2400 DEG F., mixed with an aqueous solution of magnesium chloride of not less than 19 DEG Be and/or magnesium sulphate of not less then 22 DEG Be, and a finely divided calcium-containing material, e.g. calcium carbonate or dolomite to cause expansion of the cement on setting. The cement may contain a further finely divided filler, e.g. silica, talc, shale, or barytes, and is particularly adapted for use in sealing an annular space between the wall of an oil well and a tubular casing within the latter. In an Example the cement comprises 100 lbs. of magnesia calcined at 2000 DEG to 2400 DEG F., 100 lbs. pulverized dolomite or calcite and 7 gallons aqueous magnesium chloride solution of 22 DEG Be, and sets in 4 hours 15 minutes at 120 DEG F. In two other Examples the cement comprises (1) calcined magnesia, silica, calcite, and magnesium chloride solution of 22 DEG Be, and (2) magnesia, dolomite, and magnesium sulphate solution of 28 DEG Be.
