805,528. Steam superheaters. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. April 23, 1957 [April 23, 1956], No. 12915/57. Class 123(3) An independently-fired superheater comprises a vertical furnace F lined with radiantly-heated superheater tubes 14, 18 and fired by corner-mounted, tangential firing burners 28, the furnace gases flowing through a lateral outlet D into a downpass E lined with superheater tubes and in which are located convection superheaters 24, 25. To prevent overheating of the tubes immediately above the burner zone and to give a more even heat distribution through the unit, flue gas is withdrawn from the bottom of the downpass by a fan 34 which supplies it through a duct 33 into a duct 36 which surrounds the furnace F above the burner zone. The superheater tubes 14, 18 form the inner boundary of the duct and in this peripheral region are slightly offset, are of oval section or are swaged to a smaller diameter to provide outlet ports for the gas through which it flows at low velocity into the furnace. The rotating gas mass rising through the furnace pushes the recirculated gas against the tube-lined furnace walls whereon it forms a moving blanket, indicated at 40, screening the tubes from excessive radiation.
