In a rolling mill the working cycles of a set of shears 3, Fig. 1, and of the ejectors 19 and deflector 26 of a cooling bed 2 are controlled from the movement of the rolled stock through a mechanical switch 10 actuated by the stock 1 which transmits control impulses to a thyratron or ignitron valve 12 which through preselected electronic delay apparatus 13 and further electronic switches 16, 21, 24 operates the various mechanisms. The rolled stock 1 passes through rotary shears 3 and is carried through a roller table 4 to a take-up trough 5 of the cooling bed 2 by driven conveyer rollers 6 and the leading end engages and closes the trough contact switch 10 before it enters the trough 5. Preset electronic counters 14 determine the operation of the shears 3 but the time delay is influenced by a length-measuring roller 7 and impulse sender 9 so that the length of stock remains constant at different speeds of travel through the mill. The cut lengths are alternately deflected by the deflector 26 which is similarly controlled from a preselected delay counter 20. The lengths slide alternately over ejectors 19, Fig. 2, or in the trough 5 against the side faces 30 of the ejectors 19 which are raised and lowered under control of a further preselected delay counter 23.
