Abstract

Powdered material such as fly-ash which is not subject to any substantial endothermic reaction when heated is sintered in a shaft furnace or kiln in which blast air is admitted at the bottom, the powdered material together with fuel sufficient to constitute, by combusion, the sole source of heat required for sintering being first formed, e.g. on an inclined-table noduliser, into suitable shapes before being fed to the furnace. Sintering is effected at a temperature within the limits required for sintering throughout the shapes, this temperature being closely controlled by adjusting the conditions within the charge in the furnace or kiln. Control of the temperature may be effected using excess air to remove unwanted heat content and taking off part of the heated gases at an intermediate level in the furnace, by variation of the water content of the shaped feed material up to 25 per cent, by returning a proportion of already treated material to the charge, by adding a water spray or steam to the air blast, by addition of inert gasese to the air blast, or by addition of solid fuel to the powder before forming into shapes.
