[Also in Groups XIII and XXII] A heat exchanger which may form part of an aerofoil or other aircraft surface for the purpose of de-icing or cooling at high speed has longitudinal passages A, B, ... , and dividing walls A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> ... , adjacent dividing walls being cut away at each end of the sheet to form recesses such as 5, 5a those at one end of the sheet overlapping the recesses at the other end, as shown, in Fig. 2, to provide a tortuous path for the refrigerant, &c. Sheets are formed with corresponding tongues 3 and grooves and are joined along their length, two or more sheets forming a heat exchanger, then crimped at the ends and welded. Holes 6 and 7 permit circulation of refrigerant. In a modification, the ends may be sealed by a separate metal strip. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the sheet is formed by extrusion but it may be cast. Alternatively the heat exchanger may consist, Fig. 6, of flat plates 15 enclosing longitudinal strips 16 having recesses cut as already described. Welding, brazing, pressure welding, or an adhseive may be used throughout the assembly.
