Abstract

Medicinal substances, including N,N1-di-benzylethylenediamine-dipenicillin G, that are poorly soluble or insoluble in water are solubilized by the addition of a pyrrolidone-2 derivative substituted at the nitrogen atom by an alkyl radical with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, e.g. N-methylpyrrolidone-2.ALSO:A process whereby medicinal substances that are substantially or completely insoluble in water are made soluble by the addition of a pyrrolidone-2 derivative substituted at the nitrogen atom by an alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms. The preferred derivative is N-methyl pyrrolidone-2 and is of particular value in making chloramphenicol solutions. Medicinal substances may also be extracted from crude sources by the use of the pyrrolidone-2 derivatives. Medicines given in the examples that may be solubilized in this way are procaine (both the base and the hydrochloride), butyl p-amino-benzoate, progesterone, desoxycortisone, cortisone, diethylbarbituric acid, allyl isobarbituric acid, mephenesin, camphor, digitaline and N,N1-dibenzylethylene diamine-dipenicillin G.
