Abstract
804,470. Mine roof support bars. WOOD & CO., Ltd., H. Jan. 21, 1957 [Oct. 19, 1955], No. 29871/55. Class 20(2) Extensible roof supports for mines &c. comprise bars with bifurcated joint parts allowing one bar to be pivotally connected to another and made rigid by the engagement of wedges in mating slots in the respective joint parts. Each bar has a wide bifurcation 3 at one end and a narrow bifurcation 4 at the other, and they coact in adjacent bars with a captive pivot pin 9 through holes in offset portions 7, 8 thereof. A short coupling link 13 is pivoted at 12 in the bifurcation 3 and rests on a chamfer 14, 15 and an extended slot portion 16. A slot 17 is formed in its outer end, and its pivot end is bossed and squared at 18, 19 respectively. Parallel-sided slots corresponding to slot 17 are provided in bifurcation 4, an enlargement 23 in the slot 20 guiding the link 13 when the pivoted part is raised to a horizontal position so that the slots 17, 21 are in alignment to receive a wedge. Engagement of the squared end 19 with the extended slot portion 16 prevents further pivotal movement of the bar. The joint parts may be separate and welded to the bars or they may be integral therewith.
