Abstract
804,371. Lathe details. RIMMINGTON, F. April 3, 1956 [March 30, 1955], No. 9272/55. Class 83 (3). A multi-way tool-rest for lathes and like machine-tools comprises a tool-block 1, Fig. 1, with an integral hollow cylindrical extension 9 through which a number of height-adjusting screws 10 pass. The tool-block fits over a toolpost 2, Fig. 2, on the usual slide-rest of a lathe &c. A key 21 in a slot at one side of the post is backed by a rubber or other compressable plug 37 which is moved to expand the key, and thus clamp the tool-block, by a cam 33 and metal plug 36, the former being operated by a handle 6. Other clamping arrangements are described. A rotatable pad 11 is arranged at the top of the post, and this has three clearance holes when a four-tool rest is employed, with one tool cutting at a time. The pad is arranged so that the adjusting-screws 10, for the tools in non-cutting position, pass through the clearance holes 12 while the adjusting screw for the other tool bears against the top of the pad. For indexing the tool-block, an abutment member 3 with adjusting screws 7 is moved up to contact a face of the tool-block by a handle 18. The index positions may be doubled by providing a notch 8 in the member 3 to engage the corners of the tool-block. A number of replaceable tool-blocks may be provided, and for setting the tools, a gauge arrangement with a tool-post and indexing arrangement similar to that on the lathe &c. is provided. Adjustable stops on the gauge arrangement enable the tools to be set for depth of cut, and a dial gauge on a swinging arm is used for height adjustment.
