Abstract

804,048. Forming sliver; stop motions. PACIFIC MILLS. Nov. 2, 1956 [May 16, 1956], No. 33473/56. Classes 120(1), 120(2) and 120(3) In apparatus for converting a web of filaments into a sliver of drafted staple fibres including means for separating the filaments into staple lengths, means for drafting the web, a travelling apron for supporting the web, and a helically ribbed cylinder inclined to the direction of advance of the apron and in proximity to the apron for rolling the web into a sliver (such as described in Specification 630,131), there is provided means engaging the sliver adjacent the cylinder for compressing the sliver radially of itself. The term " filaments" cover staple fibres as well as continuous filaments. As shown, a web 46, which has been subjected to "shearing" (relative movement of adjacent layers) and drafting, is carried by an apron 50 and is picked up and rolled by a helically ribbed cylinder 52, diagonally inclined to the line of travel, to form a sliver 48 which is discharged endwise of the cylinder. During the rolling, the sliver 48 is compressed radially of itself by a plate 56 supported from a shaft 58 by curved bars 60, a counterweight 68 being provided. Upon rise of the plate 56 above a predetermined position, a switch 80 is operated to stop the machine. The plate is adjustably mounted and, for many uses, the left end, Fig. 3, is nearer to the apron than the other end.
