Abstract

803,216. Presses for separating liquids from solids. LANDSVERK, A.B. Nov. 6, 1956, No. 15476/57. Divided out of 803,215. Class 46. [Also in Group VI] In a vertical screw press incorporating a press chamber with downwardly-decreasing cross-section untreated material is supplied via a central hopper above the press chamber so that the material exerts pressure on the press contents, and the screw spindle is driven from beneath the discharge opening at the lower end of the press. Material is fed by a screw 13 from a supply channel 12 into a hopper 9 and it passes thence around a cone 7 and past arms 8 (supporting a bearing 6) into the press chamber between a screw spindle 1 and a perforated jacket 3. It emerges through openings in a rotatable valve disc 21 and in a supporting ring 20 into a space 25 formed by a bottom 24 secured to the shaft and a stationary cylindrical wall 23, and may be removed therefrom through an opening in the wall by a stationary scraper. The spindle 1 is driven by a motor 18 through wheels 17, 16 in a housing 15 serving as a base plate for the press. The hopper preferably has a volume sufficient for full feeding of the press chamber over a period of seven minutes. The height of material in the hopper should not fall below 1.5 metres, corresponding to an excess pressure of 0.15 atmospheres at the upper ends of the screw blades. The spindle 1 may be perforated.
