801,802. Motor vehicles. KLOCKNERHUMBOLDT-DEUTZ A. G. May 27, 1955 [July 16, 1954], No. 15385/55. Drawings, to Specification. Class 79(3) [Also in Group XXVI] Entry of water to the engine crankcase, transmission members, such as gearbox and differentials, and wheel hubs of a motor vehicle is prevented by connecting them to a source of pressure such as the compressed air container of the braking system. The pressure may be applied continuously or controlled either at will by the driver or by a float valve fitted below the level of the lowest part to be sealed and coming into action when the vehicle travels through water. The cooling fan of the engine may also be disengaged when pressure is applied to the members to be sealed. A reduction valve is fitted in the pipe-line to the air container and, to prevent excess pressure, a breather valve already fitted or specially fitted may be set at a slightly higher pressure than the required pressure. The breather usually provided on the crankcase of an internal combustion engine must be shut off when the sealing pressure is applied and a connection from this breather is preferably led to a point above the water level expected to be encountered.
