800,956. Metal pipes. ESSER-WERKE VORM. WESTMONTAN-WERKE G.M.B.H. ERZEUGNISSE FœR BERG-UND HUTTENWERKE. Feb. 28, 1956 [Feb. 28, 1955], No. 6252/56. Class 99(2). A pipe for the transport of bulk, solid material, e.g. a pneumatic gob-stowing pipe for subterranean mining, comprises a sleeve 4 of hard, wear-resistance material mounted within an outer cover 2 of soft, steel sheet, and an intermediate layer 3 of resilient material such as rubber vulcanized on the sleeve, plastic, asphalt, bitumen, or self-adhering plastic in strip form wound on to the sleeve. As shown, the cast and case-hardened sleeve 4 incorporates an embedded, expanded metal reinforcement 5 of low-carbon steel, and the layer 3 has circumferential, helical or longitudinal grooves 8 to facilitate introduction of the sleeve into the cover. Collars 6 forming abutments for pipecoupling rings 7 are welded to the ends of the cover. The length of the sleeve may be ¢or 1/3 that of the cover, and a number of sleeves are inserted end-to-end into the cover. An additional jacket of thin sheet metal may be disposed over the sleeve and secured thereto by a thermo-hardening plastic, the sleeve and jacket being anchored within the cover by a layer of asphalt or bitumen. The layer 3, if of asphalt or plastic, may be painted on the inner and outer surfaces of the cover and sleeve before insertion of the sleeve into the cover, and in the case of a plastic the latter is hardened by the application of heat after assembly of the sleeve and cover ; alternatively, these materials are pressed in a cold or hot state between the assembled sleeve and cover.
